Hey guys. David and IKEA products are super popularfor desk setups. And hacking together a DIY setup from an 
IKEAcountertop and a couple drawer units is a great way to make a large desk space. The IKEA Alex drawers paired with somethinglike Karlby countertop is a super popular option but for this setup I built for my sisterI went with the IKEA Klimpen drawers to make for a more classy and elegant setup. 

The IKEA Klimpen drawers are great for storingaway little trinkets and accessories and the slimmer profile along with the crown moldingreally makes these drawer units look high end and elegant. On top of the drawer units I’m using 98-inchIKEA Lilltrask countertop. 

And I like this countertop because it’sdurable, easy to keep clean and relatively inexpensive. 
Also the round bullnose edge makes it a lotmore comfortable for leaning your arms against. Since I’m using a super long 98-inch topthat means there’s plenty of room for two people working on separate tasks here or fortwo full computer systems. 

But at this length you’ll get some saggingin the middle without any additional support, so I recommend putting a cheap IKEA leg inthe middle to keep the table top nice and sturdy throughout. And finally while the computer accessoriesand peripherals here are nothing to be excited about. I think the Mini ITX Jonsbo U2 case that I’musing here is a really nice way to minimize desk waste and to maximize the amount of areaavailable on this two person desk. 

So that’s a super quick look at the desksetup that I built for my sister. A really simple setup but with an eleganttwist on a popular DIY IKEA desk setup.  A new year a new desk setup. And this year I thought I’d refresh an oldfavorite, my clean modern wood design desk setup with some new tweaks, upgraded techand change of style with this refresh. But as always, my setups are about the basics,clean open space to keep my thoughts uncluttered, ergonomic touches to keep it comfortable andflexible, and technology that keeps it all working. Hi I’m David and here is my updated cleanand modern wood dream desk setup for 2019. So the big standout change with my desk setup,is the new desk. 

Or more specifically the wood tabletop. I decided to go with a rawer, more naturalcolor, Acacia kitchen countertop that I bought from Homedepot. The color pattern gives the desk a vibrantfeel and has a really nice stark contrast to items on the table. It also has a single wood piece for the liveedge that gives the table a really unique natural feel. And I also added a layer of acrylic on topto give it a nice glossy sheen and also protect it from stains and water. For the legs I’m still using the Jarvisstanding desk legs. It has smooth and quiet dual motors, reallygood height range to adjust for standing and even sitting heights. And with an IKEA Signum cable rack installedunderneath it’s easy to keep wires tidy and out the way for a clean overall desk design. Next is most expensive part of my desk setup,the giant monitor. But for me a good monitor is worth the investmentand has the biggest impact for me on improving productivity and my overall experience. This 49 inch Dell ultrawide with its 5120x1440resolution is essentially two 27” display stuck together. Sure it’s more expensive but the added flexibilityand aesthetics of a single ultrawide is worth it for me. Adding to the aesthetics and saving spaceon the desk, I’m always a fan of a monitor arm. I’m using the Amazon basic monitor arm here. 

Another good investment I feel, since youcan always re-use with future monitor upgrades. While pricey at about $100, it’s still significantlycheaper than alternatives of this build quality and strength needed to carry such a largedisplay. I also added a second cheap monitor arm witha laptop stand to keep that off the desk as well. If you’ve watched my other videos you knowthat I connect to both a laptop and desktop with my desk setup. This upgrade to a simple docking station combinedwith the built in KVM feature on my display allows me to seamlessly connect and powermy laptop through a single USB-C cable and quickly switch between systems depending onwhat I’m working on. So whether I want to use my notebook or desktopon the floor, I can have the same great experience using the same display, mouse and keyboardon either system. For my keyboard I’ve switched to the Havit86-key mechanical keyboard.

 I really like the low profile design and shorterkey travel, that makes typing on it more comfortable without the need for a palm rest. The mechanical clicking action is very satisfying. And the 10 keyless layout is perfect for whatI need without sacrificing the usability of the function or arrows keys. My only complaints are related to aesthetic,its wired, only has blue LEDs if you care about that, and has this gamer logo, whichI could really do without. But otherwise I feel it’s a fantastic keyboardfor what I need. The mouse I continue to use is the older G602logitech mouse that continues to serve me well for my comfort and needed buttons. I also now use a mouse pad to help protectthe desk and add some extra comfort when I rest my palms. I specifically got a custom designed and customsized mouse pad for my setup. I really like customizing my mouse pads toavoid unnecessary branding and to get the right size for my keyboard and mouse so itdoesn’t take up unnecessary space on the desk. Audio is the last thing I was looking to fixwith this updated setup. 

I picked up these PreSonus Eris for my speakers. I like them because they aren’t too big,they’re simple looking, sound decent and not too expensive. I do find them a little harsh in the highend out of the box, so I tune them down a bit with the equalizer built on the speaker. They can’t connect via USB so keep thatin mind if you’re looking for USB PC speakers. But I was specially looking for a poweredRCA cable driven speaker to connect to a mixer. I wanted to have both my chromecast audioand PC audio feeding into these speakers at the same time. Using this external mixer, now I can hearaudio from both sources without needing to toggle inputs like with most speakers, andcan also adjust the volume levels of each of the sources independently. A pricey upgrade but well worth it for someonelike me, who listens to a lot of music throughout my condo with all my chromecast devices. 

So that my revised clean and modern wood desksetup for 2019. I’m really happy with how it looks and functionsbased on my needs and look forward to getting work done with this new productivity setup. But hope guy enjoyed this one. You know what to do. And I’ll see you in the next video.

 Four years ago, I hurt my right ankleduring a game of football. I had torn not one, not two, but threeligaments. Amazingly, for how rough I have been on my body over the years, I wasthankful that that was only my first serious injury, which took me severalmonths to recover from. As a fitness coach and sports enthusiast, I was eagerto get back in shape after about four months off. But when recovering from aninjury of this severity, my right ankle had lost much of its stability and rangeof motion. And at that point of time, I could no longer deep squat without fallingover backwards. 


So embarassingly, in my first session back to lifting weights,with my body rusty, my ankle unreliable, and despite using much lighter weightsthan I used to, my form crumbled during a lift, and I ruptured a disc in my spineas a result. That was another couple of months that I had to spend on the sidelinesrecuperating. Having multiple major injuries and having to spend such a longtime being physically inactive back-to-back, really destroyed mymotivation and momentum. My body had never felt worse. Sitting at my desk forjust an hour or two would cause spasms in my back, and my ankle troubles alsoaffected my knee and hip. 


It was a painful mess. Because I struggled to sitcomfortably at a desk, I started to get restless and fidgety, which made me lookfor other ways to work on my computer. That was how and why I first startedsitting on the floor. The idea was simple. Every now and then, I would work awayfrom my desk. My most preferred position was deep squatting with my back leaningagainst the wall, as this allowed me to stretch my tight ankles and hips withoutfalling over backwards. At first, my right foot would have pinsand needles in just a few minutes. Then I would sit down with my ass on the floorand continue working from there.

 When I felt like it again, I would go back intoa deep squat, or into one of the many other positions that would lightlystretch another part of my body. The more I sat on the floor, the more pain free Ifelt. I got so comfortable with the floor, that what was supposed to be just analternative way to work on my computer, soon became the primary way. 


When I wassleepy, I would even just take a nap on thefloor. This was all amusing to friends and family, as they struggled tocomprehend why I would prefer to sit on the floor when I had a perfectlyfunctional desk and chair available to me. I really appreciated the freedom tomove when on the floor, so when it was time to move into our new apartment, I broughtup an idea to HL of having our workspace be on the floor, because of allthe benefits to my body that I've experienced firsthand. But we didn't justgo ahead with the idea on a whim; it was quite a significant change after all. 


Wehad our concerns, and questions about the practicality of it all. Would it getuncomfortable? Is it even good for our body in the long run? So we did ourresearch, and even though we can't say that we have an answer to every question,I think we got it mostly figured out. In many cultures, notably Asian cultures,sitting on the floor is still the preferred way to rest and engage insocial activities like having a meal together. Outside of these cultures,there's also a growing group of people who are adopting these practices purelyout of preference. 


Sitting on the floor and deep squatting are simply natural humanresting positions. There's no reason why it should be uncomfortable, except modernlife has pretty much coached us out of these habits. But frankly, sitting on afloor chair that has a backrest doesn't feel any less comfortable than sittingon a normal chair — for us at least. If there's any bit that's uncomfortable, itwould be getting in and out of the seat when used with the floor desk. But once seated,it feels great. Of course the level of comfort can't be compared to sitting onmodern furniture, such as ergonomic office chairs, which are designed to keep uscomfortable in one position for extended periods of time.


 Some mayimagine sitting on the floor to be uncomfortable, or at least lesscomfortable than sitting on more conventional furniture. Therefore sittingon the floor must be bad for the body — but there isn't a direct correlationbetween the two. There's been a lot of talk about how prolonged sitting isdetrimental to our health. But for many, having to work long hours often in anoffice chair, is an unavoidable reality. 


And while economics is certainly animportant aspect that should be paid careful attention to, sitting in an expensiveergonomic chair, in a perfectly optimized environment for 12 hours a day isstill going to mess up the human body on a deep, deep level. But that's not to saythat chairs are the culprits, not at all. Similarly, sitting on thefloor is also NOT going to be the solution.


 One can be sedentary whethersitting on the chair or on the floor. The real issue is not how we are sitting, buthow little we are moving. So when it came time to decide on our own sittingsituation, we realized that what we valued more was the freedom and variety ofoptions that sitting on the floor provides us with. O


ur catchphrase whenit comes to taking good care of our bodies, is "Eat well, Move more and Worryless." And ever since we've started sitting on the floor, we found ourselvesmoving much more. There are smaller movements like shifting between thediff

When I originally designed this room It's purpose was to run my computer business But since I haven't been doing that for years now I think it's time for a change So the first thing I wanted to do was design a new desk Thought about buying a new desk but I really just didn't like any of the designs that were out there Most of the desks I see are horribly inefficient in their design Take my desk at work, I literally do not use the back half of the desk So yeah, 

in the age of LCD monitors There's really no need for a desk to be any deeper than say, 24 inches maximum (60cm) And I can only sit in the center of the desk because of these darn drawers are in the way of my legs So I went to Google SketchUp and started playing with some ideas I like some of the cubicles we have at work They are a very efficient design So I drew up two cubicles

 Now, I share this room with my daughter, so one would be her desk and the other would be mine There was still one problem with this though So one of the things that I've wanted for awhile is to have a little of extra space on my desk Y'know, where I can set up a, occasionally one of my old antique computers without sacrificing space for my primary computer 

So I started working a totally different design One of the important features of the new desk was to make certain that my legs and feet are free to move around So once I was done with the design in SketchUp I decided to draw the design on the floor with masking tape I was able to confirm that the door would still open fine as well as what sort of movement I'd be able have with my chair I was also able to confirm that the largest computer that 

I own, an Apple IIe, would comfortably fit on one of the three diagonal areas I also decided to add some other interesting features For example, I could put triangular shaped shelves at each of the corners underneath the desk This would be an excellent place to a Mac Mini, or a battery backup, or any external hard drives without cluttering up the top of the desk

 So, I'm going to tell you right now I've decided on a very unconventional construction technique Now, I'm not a expert desk maker, but in a way that gives me an unique perspective because when I walk though a hardware store and I look at things, in my mind, rather than seeing "Well this is what this piece is designed to do", I can look at it from an outside of the box type of perspective, to say "What can this piece of hardware actually do?", 

what can it be made to do? And uh, so I've come up with a very different design, for designing furniture And uh, some people who probably make furniture gonna be watching this going like this... but I think, you'll see there's method to my madness and I have very specific goals And I have opted to not use some conventional techniques for building desks and I think you'll see why I decided to use these L shape brackets to hold the peices together, some them weren't entirely 90 degrees so 

I used the vice at work to bend them to a more precise angle So one of the benefits to the design I'm using with the brackets is, that the desk is easy to disassemble, I can literally take it apart, and I can move it somewhere. uhm, but the other thing is, is it's also very easy to repair, should a part break, it's pretty easy to take that part off and make a new one and put it back on. These shelves that once held hundreds of iBooks and Macbooks, will now have new purpose as well. I'm going to turn them into a museum. 


So I'm going to be putting on display all of my old computers and game systems and electronics and stuff from the 1970's and 1980's I think they'll be pretty neat Okay, so this will be a two part video, and this is just about the end of part one. Uhm, in part two I'm going to show you uh, more of the construction and show you more of the secrets and interesting little ideas I've come up with to make this the ultimate computer desk I'm also going to attempt to give you a breakdown of the costs of each type of material what not that went into making this As well as an estimate of the time So stick around for part two, I think you're going to find it pretty interesting.

I’ve been using standing desks for wellover a year now. But do I think they are overrated? In my opinion some standing desk solutionsaren’t really worth it. The health benefits of standing is highlydebated and probably not that beneficial. And I strongly believe a good office chairis a better investment for your money. But considering all of that, I would stillbuy another standing desk if I had to make the decision all over again. Hi I’m David these are of thoughts and experienceswith Standing Desks I really enjoy switching from sitting to standingwhenever I’m feeling sore from sitting for too long. Even in the most expensive and fanciest ofchairs, I’ll still get a little antsy or fidgety.


 So switching between sitting and standinghelps alleviates that problem for me. Sure if you don’t have a standing desk,just stretching or taking a water break regularly is going to be good enough. But if I’m deep in some work, standing atmy desk lets me stretch my legs and pace around and still keep focused on my work. Even when I’m not working having a standingdesk at home makes it a lot more convenient to jump on and off the computer to changea song, google something or respond to some email that can sporadically occur throughoutthe day. But I’ll be honest, I still probably stillsit for about 80% of my day. Since sitting at my desk is just as importantas standing at my desk, I really don’t like permanent standing desks or any manual standingdesks that require a lot of effort or time to adjust. Sure you could use a high chair with a permanentstanding desk but getting good ergonomics out of a high chair can be quite challenging. Manual crank standing desks do allow you toswitch between sitting and standing and are usually quite a bit cheaper. But I personally found the process of cranking,slow and a burden that resulted in me being lazy and not bothering to switch as much. 


Tabletop risers are also an option, and areprobably the only solution for those stuck in cubicals where you can’t switch out toa new desk. But it’s definitely not my preferred optionas they are bit clunky, take up lot of desk real estate, and don’t really allow youto do anything else standing up other than use your keyboard and mouse. So I think for most people, if you want toget a standing desk you should probably save up for a fully electric motorized standingdesk. The good thing though is that budget electricstanding desks are pretty widely available these days. Though there are some key things that I’dlook out for before you go and just buy the cheapest thing available in the market. Like memory buttons. 


Definitely get a desk with a memory buttonif you can. One click to stand, One click to sit. Simple, no fuss. And completely worth it. 2 memory buttons is good enough for a singleuser but more is better especially if have multiple people using the same desk and needdifferent heights. Next, check height range for the desk. I guess I’m on the shorter side at 5’7,so the standing height has never really been a problem for me, but I find the minimum heights,usually around 27 inches, is often are too tall for me, so I end up needing to use afoot rest with a desk at this minimum height. But if I had to look for one again I’d tryto find one that can go a little lower to accommodate my shorter legs. 


Checking the stability of the desk is a littlemore challenging. I think at the highest height most electricdesks will have some sway to them if you try to shake them. But honestly I’ve never really have an issuewith stability while just typing or using a mouse on a computer. If you’re sensitive to shaking, much tallerthan I am, or just doing more vigorous tasks that require the desk to be super stable. You could look for a desk that has a crossbarunderneath but I tend to hit those with my knees or legs. Or you could find a four legged version ofa standing desk but those can get pretty pricey. So I think for most people you really won’tnotice issues with stability on anything half decent during regular use.


 Standing on your feet will be tiring especiallyif you’re not used to it. Even standing on carpet gets pretty tiringon the soles of my feet. Most people will recommend getting an anti-fatiguemat which is a good idea. But you will need to constantly move it inand out of place when switching from sitting to standing, which is pretty annoying forme, so I personally don’t use one. Instead I’ll just use some supportive sandalsor shoes when standing and while I could probably stand longer if I also had an anti-fatiguemat.


 I’m fine just sitting back down when myfeet and legs are feeling a little tired. Next let’s talk about noise. Using a standing desk at home for personaluse, noise for the motors really isn’t an issue for me unless someone happens to besleeping while I’m working. At the office on the otherhand, in open concept,and a sea of employees raising and lowering their desks throughout the day. I’ll probably feel a little different aboutthe noise. Maybe I would get used to it but I can imaginemyself going a bit crazy hearing a bunch of noisy desks moving up and down all day long. And finally the tabletop. 


A lot of companies will sell their motorizedlegs and tabletops separately. So if you find the tabletops ridiculouslyexpensive or just not in the color you want, buying the legs on their own and then grabbinga tabletop from IKEA is my preferred option. The IKEA Gerton is a really nice option: solidwood, good sized, and fairly affordable at only $90. Or IKEA Kitchen Countertops can also workreally well and are available in pretty much any color and design you would want. Considering all of this, for me at least thestanding desk wasn’t a fad that I eventually got bored with, and I still very much continueto switch between sitting and standing regularly. 


While I could go back to a regular sittingdesk, and I’d definitely recommend investing in a good chair first if you don’t alreadyhave one. If I had to make the decision today I’dstill definitely spend the extra cash to get another electric standing desk all over again. But hope you guys enjoyed this one. You know what to do. All right, that's actually a lot of water, I can see how even without a radiator for the amount of timeyou would reasonably spend like hunched over a mobile device gaming, this would probably be enoughto just absorb the heat. - I think you underestimate how much candy crush people play. - I like the position ofthe fittings on the back.  99% of phones, on the one hand I don't believe itbecause that's impossible. Like they basically justneed to get their hands on the device and creating this like simple, flexible plastic mold. And then like a second layer here that acts as a water bladder. It's pretty straightforward. Okay, I get it. So you tighten down the color and it kind of squeezes like, these, these plastic pieces so they hold the tubing in place. You can see there, you can kind of separate them out there. And then as for the pump, you just kind of, it's a submersible pump anyway, so doesn't really matterif it's a perfect seal. So you just kind of jamthat puppy in there, go. - Did you, oh man. - No. - Okay. - It's fine. And then on the other side, we've just got a simple insertion fitting that hopefully doesn't leak. Are you ready, you ready? - Oh, that water flow is not good. - That's it. - It doesn't even fill up, what. - We're on our second 3d Mark run and what kind of attemptsare we looking at here? - I think on the top right now we're looking at about 43.3. - Yeah, that's pretty reflective though.  - But the scores are way down. So it's throttling to keep the surface temperatures under control, which means after justthree and a half runs, we've reached the pointwhere there could be-- - A benefit. - A clear benefit, getit get it clear benefit. Got them, clear benefit to using our phone water cooler. However, before we use this, I kind of want to know how bad that gets, and I want to deal withthe false advertising on the packaging for this product. So first of all, the implication here seems tobe that there's some sort of RGB lighting in the reservoir. I mean, that product photo looks nothing like what they deliver. Okay, and flippingaround to the other side. The tubing or the water. Something is clearly blue. So I feel like our water needs to be blue. - Yes. - Oh, yeah. - Wow. - Dye pack. - Don't forget, look at that water flow. Just hold on, hold on. Actually, that's hilarious. It's actually-- - It's not a stream, it's just a drip. - Yeah, hit me with somemore blue here, Jake. - That's a lot of blue. It looks looks kinda likethe product page now. - Gosh, it's so slow looking actually, you can see here holdon if I put this down-- - There's no water flowat the edges of the case. - You're just gonna dip it, oh man. Other than being a little bit on the bulgy side, which obviously it needsbecause it's got that that water bladder, you can really see that there. It actually fits the phone, pretty well. Gotta give credit where credit is due, I mean bad website, misleading box but like that's, that's on there. - Look at the camera. It's like 37 degrees on the camera and then ice cold on the back. Okay, well not ice cold yet. - Not ice cold yet. - I just realized this is actually bad that the RGB surface in there we're heating the water with it. - Oh not much it's I can see it. - Chill out. - It's 25 degrees on that RGB strip and we're hurting our results, Linus. - I think we're okay so OpenGL. - Arnold. - But Vulcan, oh, that's on par. - No. - So I guess it justtook second to pull out. - It took a really long time because it is not verythermally conductive. - We didn't give it anytime to cool down either we probably should have but let's see how it goes man. - Oh, no because this is, this is exactly what we want to know. - This is the use cases. - Yeah. - You just slap it on, does it does it fix problem. - Does it fix the problem. - It crashed. - Way to go, now you interrupted it. 



Well, it said 70 to 70. As of the result, it looklike our benchmark crashed. But that score. That's Better. That's almost as good as the first run. Oh, please don't crash this time it is getting a little warmer. - No, actually the reservoiris getting a touch warmer. So you can see it's hoveringsomewhere between 24 and 26 now instead of 20 to 24, so it's definitely heating up. We're done, 7263 and 6578. How are we doing? - That's basically spoton with the first run. (cheering) - It works. It works. - No way. - The system works. And now I'm gonna go seeif our ice pack is cold. - Wow, okay, yeah, minus five, minus five and a half. - Yeah, it's completely frozen. I made the mistake of freezing it flat. And I didn't realize thisis the not very useful gel, kind of a cold pack where it doesn't. It's not really a gel. It's just ice. Oh, man, can we just get ice? - No. - Oh my god. - This is not very well thought out. - [Jake] I mean, I can see theice pack through the water. - I think it is getting colder. I feel like I'm havinglike Anakin Skywalker but it's working. - [Jake] The thermal camera says, 20 and a half 21 degrees. - [Linus] Oh yeah, and the sticker says 20 and a half, 21 degrees. - That's good thing. You know, thank goodness thisphone is IP rated, right? - [Jake] Yeah. - So we can use you know, a good cooler on it. - [Jake] After this test, should you try it andtry to do some gaming. That will evaluate the feel. - I can already tellit's pretty unpleasant. Like it's like my fingers are very cold. I think it's more reasonable to have it running near ambient and it works well enough. - Yeah. - We're just trying tosee if we can squeeze more performance out of it at this point. Okay, here we go. 



You're ready for a score. You ready for a score boys? 7270, 6596. That made no difference at all. - [Jake] It's exactly the same. Okay, actually the Vulcanrun is the highest number we've seen so far. - [Linus] Yeah. - [Jake] But it's not like it's gonna overclock itself. - Silliness with thedumb included gel packs that don't really fit in the reservoir and uninspiring build quality aside, this thing actually works. So even with the limited thermal transfer from a thin plastic layer, enough heat is drawn away from the phone. And it takes so long for thereservoir to heat up that ice. I would say this isactually a reasonable way to cool your phone as soon, look Jake, assuming that obviously you don't need to, you know, move anywhere overan extended period of time which obviously you don't, because you're sitting playing PUBG mobile for hours at a time, and compared to other solutions that we've looked at in the past. What's nice about this one is that if you're done playing PUBG mobile, you want to actuallytake your phone with you and not be attached toyour water cooling setup, you just pop it out of the case. It's that quick, and it's off to the races. I don't know that Iwould spend US $25 on it, but Andy said you canget them for as little as like seven or $8. - I think it was like five or 10. - If thermal throttling on your phone is legitimately a problem for you. It works, this is notthe dumbest solution.

You know, what's crazyif you think about it. Even going back 20 years, whether we're talking 20pin versus 24 pin ATX, or four versus eight pin CPU connectors. Motherboards and power supplies, have been mostly interchangeable. You just left some pins unpopulated or had the extras hanging off the side, and the system would limpalong as best as it could. Well, today, that all changes. As far as I can tell, I amthe first to go hands on, with the brand new ATX12VO standard. 

Now, this looks perfectlynormal at first glance, but wait, what about this? Gone, is the 24 pin connector. Gone, is the five volt rail. Gone, is the 3.3 volt rail. They're not there! This will not work with your motherboard. But why though Linus? Why do you wait so long totell us about your sponsor? Like GlassWire. But, we're gonna do ourbest to un-box this thing. So, perfectly normal looking in every way, except if you look really closely. All we've got is 12 voltsand 12 volts standby. None of the other typical rails that you'd find on a power supply. Also the cabling harness, has some extra little surprises for us. Replacing our 24 pinconnector, is this right here. So it's like a 10 pin brick, but there's actually onlynine conductors in it for whatever reason that would be. We've got a four plus four pin, so the 12 volt CPU connector remains. In fact, this unit has yup,here we go, two of them. There's another one of those. We've got a handful ofsix pin and six plus twos for our graphics cards. And then the other notable omission, is where's all the SATAand Molex connectors? Well, we do have one lead, that's got a SATA and then two Molexes. But if you look, the 3.3 voltand five volt conductors, aren't there. So, they're just 12 volt, which means whateveryou're powering with these, would have to not requireany five volt power. So for example, if youhad a fan controller or like a front panel thing on your case, that used to say the connector, but only needed 12 volt power,you can use it for this. So it's mechanically compatible, but not necessarilyelectrically compatible, with every device that it would plug into. There's gonna be someheadache and heartache, in this transition. Now that's curious, one of these six pins, is keyed the same as aPCI express connector, which would lead me to believe that it delivers the same voltages, but it's not labeled PCIe, which I have to wonderis that intentional, Is it intended to be used... It is, how interesting! Let's take a look at the motherboard. This is the ASRock Z490Phantom Gaming 4SR. And to my knowledge, this isthe only ATX12VO motherboard, that's actually in existence right now outside of just a lab somewhere. ASRock worked with Intelto develop this thing, and other than the ATX12VOportion of the board, flab look at in a moment here,it's pretty normal looking. So you got your LGA 1200socket, dual channel memory, you got your BRM cooling, you got your dual PCIe x16slot, all that normal stuff. But here, up here, this is where things get spicy. So, that's where that10 pin connector goes. This is called the ATX12VO connector, and then that second six pin, that is otherwise identicalto PCI express six pin, is apparently called, ATX Board Power 2. And then these are fascinating. So just like we saw on the Mac pro, where if you wanted toplug in a SATA drive, you actually had to plugoff of the motherboard in order to deliver power to it. Well, we're seeing exactlythe same thing here. So these are SATA of powerconnector one and two. 

Remember what I said aboutthat SATA power connector on the power supply. It doesn't have all the conductors in it. So, we actually need to take12 volt into the motherboard, use this DC to DC conversion circuitry, and then come out here, in order to properlypower up a SATA drive. Before you ask whereyou can buy it though, this motherboard is not intended for sales in the regular channel. And it's actually for system integrators, who want to be among the firstto adopt this new standard. Let's talk about why, but first, some background. - [Man] I don't wanna learn! - Too bad. At a very basiclevel, a computer power supply, converts the AC or alternatingcurrent from your wall into the DC or direct current, that the integrated circuitsin your PC need to operate. A CPU's logic gateswouldn't work very well, if the electrons wereflowing first one way, then the other, 60 times a second. The harder part of a power supply's job, is that it needs tosimultaneously do this, multiple times over. Supplying a variety of different voltages, to the various parts of your system. And, it needs to outputwithin very tight tolerances, to avoid unnecessary wear and tear. Think about how your houselightsmight dim a little bit, when you fire up your clothes dryer. That ain't ideal forsensitive electronics. So a good power supplyprovides steady, clean power to for example, your graphics card, whether your CPU issitting there doing nothing or just spinning up abig rendering project. The final challenge for a power supply, is that it needs to doall of this efficiently. Not only does any wastedenergy get converted to heat, making your PC run hotter and louder, due to the extra cooling requirements, It also just plain wastes energy, putting more strain onthe electrical grid, and adding more pollutionto the environment, with no real benefit whatsoever. 

So on the one hand, it'sgreat that we've enjoyed this period of unprecedented intergenerational compatibility, because the evolutionsof the ATX standard, have been mostly gearedaround delivering more juice, to keep up with evermorepower-hungry hardware. But on the other hand, meanwhile, the rest of the world hasbeen barreling towards an energy consumption crisis of humanity threatening proportions. And industries like utilities,transportation, HVAC, and consumer electronics, have been under pressurefrom regulatory bodies, to ever more aggressiveenergy efficiency targets. So that, is what'sdriving the new standard that we're looking at here. Now, to be clear, it's notlike computer power supplies, haven't gotten more efficient. 

80 Plus marketing has been great, for raising consumer awarenessof power supply efficiency. But, something you probably don't know, is that a basic 80 Pluscertified power supply, is only required to hit 80%efficiency, at 20% load or more. Which only really happens when you're actually doingsomething with your computer. Let's take this machine for example. It's got a 650 watt power supply, and sitting here at the Windows desktop, it's sucking back anywherebetween 60 and 80 Watts. That's only about 9%. At these kinds of loads,according to Intel, we could be looking at aslow as 50 to 60% efficiency. Let's swap out the powersupply and motherboard, with our new ATX12VOsetup and see how it goes. I actually have not triedthis so, good luck everybody. Now, I may have put myself ata bit of a disadvantage here, because, the lower you go interms of power consumption, the less efficient aconventional power supply is. 

So, the fact that I even have a discrete graphics card in here, means that we might notsee as extreme improvement as we would if we wererunning say, onboard graphics. Things like RGB lights on the memory, are also going to contribute to that. I do still wanna give it a crack though, given that this motherboardthat we're trying out here, is marketed as, I mean,gaming is right in the name, and it would be prettytypical for a gamer, to not at least have some manner of discrete graphics card in their system. My muscle memory was like, I'mhooking up a new motherboard, I'm gonna put in my... (laughing loudly) So I hook up the new power supply. I've seen articles about this, but I'm pretty sure I'm the first one to actually hook one up outside of a lab. The fact that we have so many pins, I mean, it's 10 plus six, this is 16 pins. It sort of raises the question, why didn't they just do like,two eight pin connectors, which we already have? And if they didn't wanna reuseconnectors we already have, why did they use a PCIe six pin? That seems like if partof the goal was to reduce the bulk of the connectors, then, mission not accomplished. 'Cause, it's like very similar. Oh, is that it? Wait, are we ready? ATX12VO. 

Here we go, ladies and gentlemen, I'm rooting for you ATX12VO. Oh, excellent. Date and time not set, who cares? This is huge, I was not expecting this. - [David] Holy crap! - [Linus] Right? That's actually way betterthan I was expecting. You know what the crazy part of this is? I was just guessing at whatkind of grade of efficiency power supply this was. If you Google this part number, literally zero Googleresults come up, nothing. So I was just guessing650, I know it's 650 watt, but I was guessing GD, was gonna mean that they were targeting kind of 80 Plus Gold-ish efficiency. 

So that's why we picked an80 Plus Gold power supply. So this is a Seasonic FOCUSGold, to compare it to. And even though we've got agraphics card and everything, we just cut our idle power consumption, literally in half, less than half. - [David] What about like rendering? - I'm really glad you asked. So, these changes are really focused on idle power consumption. And once you reach the wheelhouse, of a conventional power supply, which is typically around 50% load, the advantages pretty much disappear. So, that was why I didn'tdo like a heavy load test before and after, I'm not expecting really any savings there. So, that raises the question, why is this so much better? I'm so glad we got this result because the rest of the video is scripted according to it's better.


 Here's the thing, convertingfrom AC to DC power, is extremely inefficient. And conventional power supplies do it multiple times, for the multiple voltages, that they need to supply. Now, it's actually better togo from AC to 12 volt only like we're doing here and then derive the otherrequired DC voltages from that. So, Intel figures, we should be able to getas high as 75% efficiency, even at just eight to 10 watts. But, Linus you might say, some high-end power suppliesdo that already anyway? So, to meet upcoming energyefficiency standards, like top runner from Japan, CECTier 2, and ENERGY STAR 8.0, Intel, and their partnerswent a step further. 

That is why the 12 volt down conversion, is taking place here on the motherboard, rather than in the power supply. Because, the higher the voltage, the less conduction losswe're gonna need to deal with, over the runs of wire thatgo to the motherboard. So by having only 12volt and 12 volt standby coming from the power supply, you actually get marginallyless loss there as well. Now, there is an increase in board space and you can see here,how much is required, for not just the voltage conversion, but even these extraconnectors that you need for things like, you know, hard drives. But, Intel says that fromthe boards that they've seen, this is still achievablefor micro ATX boards.


 Now it'll add some costson the motherboard side, but you should end up saving some costs on the power supply side, and it should end up beingabout a wash for the consumer. So, it works, now what? For most people, nothing. At the moment, this standard is poisedto play a much bigger role in system integrated machines, that are targeting government, or other institutions thathave efficiency targets to hit, while the 24 Pins standard, still makes up for its inefficiency, with the convenience of forwardand backwards compatibility for enthusiasts. In the longterm though, who knows? It might end up being big success like the EPS eight pin CPU connector, that was ultimately adopted by AMD as processor power consumptionexploded in the early knots, or it might be a crushingfailure like BTX, which incidentally wasalso an Intel standard that started out as asystem integrator only play.
